Munnar Tea

History of Tea in Munnar

As part of his efforts to resolve a border dispute between the neighbouring state of Madras and the Kingdom of Travancore in 1877, British Resident John Daniel Munro paid a visit to Munnar. 

Munro immediately leased the Kannan Devan hills in Munnar from the august Rohini Thirunal Kerala Varma Valiya Raja after determining that they would make excellent plantation property. Tea was first planted in the Munnar region in 1880 by a European planter by the name of A.H. Sharp, and it quickly became the most lucrative crop in the area.

Finlay Muir & Company acquired 137,000 acres of Munnar tea estates in the late 1890s, and to oversee them, it established the Kannan Devan Hills Produce Company. The Finlay Company was bought by the Tata Group in 1973. In 1983, its subsidiary, Tata Tea Limited, fully took over the Munnar plantations. Tata Tea discontinued operations in Munnar in 2005 and transferred its tea business to the recently founded Kannan Devan Hills Plantations Company (KDHP), which is mostly owned by its plantation workers.

Even today, 68% of KDHP is owned by the tea-picking workers (Tata owns 18%, while a Trust and other stakeholders own 14% combined). In Munnar, 97% of the plantation workers are also company stockholders.

Munnar Black Tea

Black tea is a curious variety of tea that is sold in Munnar. Both the dried leaves and the brewed tea have a dark colour that suggests oxidation. Compared to other teas, black tea often has a higher caffeine content, and it also has a deep aroma and is full-bodied with a malty flavour, brisk taste and rich colour.

Munnar White Tea

Tea leaves that have been allowed to wither are used to produce this type of tea. These withered leaves are processed after being dried. The scent of white tea is soft and mild. It is not as finely processed as green tea and has less caffeine.

Green tea is processed and its oxidation is halted by steaming, baking, or pan-firing. This process is done to reduce the moisture content in the leaves before packing them.
